The vibrant colours of Malene Oddershede Bach's SS12 collection immediately caught my eye as I entered the Vauxhall Fashion Scout exhibition at London Fashion Week. The young designer graduated from Middlesex University in only 2010 and worked as the Assistant Designer at Preen by Thornton Bergazzi before setting up her own label and launching it in September, making this her first collection under her own name.
In this collection Malene was inspired by pyschedelic films such as David Cronenberg's Videodrome and Gaspar Noe's Enter The Void. For the new spring/summer season the designer has used cheerful sunshine yellow, turquoise and pink tones as well as slick black. However, upon chatting to the designer herself it soon transpired that there is much more to these fabrics than meets the eye.
The collection is partly drawn from feelings of loss and a sense of unfulfillment. The subtle print on the yellow is actually a close up view of the scales on a butterfly's wing. She has beautifully captured a gorgeous but delicate piece of nature. Then, with rather more ick factor, we have the turquoise print. This beautiful fabric has actually been designed from a close up view of mouse intestines! I must confess this doesn't sound appealing to me, but the print is just so visually clever. It certainly gives another layer of depth to the pieces and makes you think about the fashion you're wearing.
Amongst the fabrics are some very intriguing textures including silk georgette, hand knitted pieces and tailored leather jackets. Some of the pieces are made up of more than 25 metres of fabric! The garments feature unusual strong cut details, especially around the neckline and shoulders. Malene also uses interesting two-way pleating techniques and I just love the way the fabrics hang. The looks are perfectly finished with fierce footwear.
These are very elegant, wearable clothes with an edge, that look like a lot of fun. I'm really excited to see what Malene Oddershede Bach comes up with next. She was a part of Vauxhall Fashion Scout's 'Ones To Watch' and I couldn't agree more.

This is the best thing I've ever read. Amazing. It totally looks like the type of thing someone would wear after they majorly messed up & were all like "Look at my dress look at my dress!"
