Bora Aksu's stunning SS13 collection was a wonderfully etheral vision combining fragility and power.
Modern Queen was inspired by an enchanting young beauty called Marie, the granddaughter of Queen Victoria, born an English princess destined to become a Romanian Queen. Marie's marriage was sadly not a happy one and when respect turned to revulsion she channeled her energy into her love of art and her beautiful gardens. Through the sheer layers of these garments, built up like protective petal layers surrounding a flower bud, we see an Art Deco influence in the botanical shapes.
My favourite shade in this feminine collection is a pretty periwinkle blue whilst purple gives a royal flavour, paired with soft dove greys. Also present were sunshine yellow and flashes of red like a flame in the linings of garments. The light fabrics swayed alluringly, like flowers in the wind, but there were also sharper moments in a tailored power wardrobe encompassing the formality of Marie's position.
The regal nature of the collection is epitomized in those incredible knitted crowns, created in collaboration with Liria Pristine. There is so much tiny detail in them working to create a striking millinery piece which makes a huge impact, wrapped around the fluffy teased tresses of the models.
This sweepingly romantic vision was most definitely a highlight of London Fashion Week for me. All my life I've loved exploring gardens and I love the horticultural influence in this collection's motifs. It's a wonderfully elegant affair, perfect for holding court in modern life.
