Obscure Couture SS12

The collection before had finished with soaring classic music, but the change in atmosphere was extreme for the final collection to show at LGN Events emerging designers showcase. The music was loud and thumping with heaps of attitude. You may have noticed that this is obviously not a classically Florrie collection but I do think the label's one worth noting.
The Obscure Couture label was founded in 2010 by the Glasgow based duo Jennifer Coyle and Lyndsay Pagan. All of the clothes are handmade and created in a limited edition for a fabulous quality paired with this brash punk take on fashion.
I won't repeat what was on the back of the first hoody, but let's just say these clothes have aggression aplenty, more than equalling the music. The designers have a spirit akin to that of a rebellious young Vivienne Westwood and the plaids made me think of Cher in the 90s film Clueless. The SS12 collection is titled Us Vs Them. 
Some of the metallic leathers were a little gaudy. I liked the pink but not so much the red, though I do think red was the right colour in itself to go with the yellow. On the other hand the collection so glorifies in being a little trashy, but in a good way.
Then in contrast there are the floaty, beautifully painted silks, soaring wonderfully, but also reminiscent of blood splatters! Within the collection I felt the colourful pieces were stronger than some of the mainly black ones. All the looks were finished off rather fabulously with neon shoes, which was a wonderful touch.
The finale dress was a vision in two plaid fabrics. It kept up the attitude but with lots of added drama in the volume that would be perfect for sweeping on to a red carpet. I also really liked the earlier top with stack upon stack of ruffles, mixing up plaid and flashes of pink.
This dynamic duo have some exciting prospects ahead of them, just perhaps with a little more polish. These might not be clothes I would wear but the aesthetic of them I would and do. Coyle and Pagan design for women who dress to please themselves, projecting that image for all to see. They follow instincts rather than trends, and that I very much applaud. With this sense of style paired with such clothes I think they have amazing potential and I can't wait to see what they come up with next!
