Raffaele Ascione's darkly romantic Autumn/Winter 12/13 collection at London Fashion Week showcased a juxtaposition of sportswear, inspired by basketball jerseys, and the glamour of Studio 54. Held in the striking architecture of the Freemasons Hall, the presentation was a grand affair which allowed the garments to be seen both still and moving as the models walked in to their spots and rotated along with the spirited beat of the music, the precision leaving a strong impression.
The dramatic formation also allowed Ascione's garments to be viewed from all angles, truly showing off the intriguing silhouettes from oversized cosy cocoons to an elegant sack back dress. Each and every shape is an empowering one from extravagant flares to majestically sweeping full length gowns which move beautifully.
The exquisite lace seen in panels or elaborate embellishment is from a collaboration with French lace house Sophie Hallette. The lavish, richly dark feel of the collection actually made me think of the Baroque period in art history, though paired with an urban feel seen in oversized hoop earrings and smart clutch bags.
Raffaele Ascione's smouldering debut solo collection feels both timeless and inherently modern, I'm really excited to see what he'll be producing in the future and what ideas he will bring to the coming seasons.
